Feeling Happier (From Allure Magazine)

A simple type of meditation practice can boost feelings of love, amusement, contentment, and joy – and that’s not all. Over nine weeks, volunteers who began regularly meditating showed significant gains in health, self-acceptance, and their relationships with others, compared with people who had not yet taken a meditation course. The meditators practiced in six hour-long sessions and were asked to practice on their own at least five days a week. The exercise they performed, known as loving-kindness mediation, involved sitting quietly with eye closed, focusing on their breathing, and directing compassionate feelings toward a loved one, oneself, and “an ever-widening circle of others.” Although mediators reported no difference in negative feelings throughout the study, they developed less depression. The researchers, led by Barbara Fredrickson, a psychologist at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, conclude that the meditators’ increase in positive feelings enabled them to cope better with negative events and emotions. Fredrickson provides tips on mediation and happiness in her new book, Positivity.
